Sovinec
Approximately 4 kilometres from Paseka, at the edge of the Nízký Jeseník Mountains on a chiselled promontory above a deep valley sits one of the most picturesque castles of Northern Moravia, Sovinec Castle (Eulenberg). The founding of the castle dates to the first half of the 14th century. The castle was gradually expanded and its fortifications were perfected. Thecastle’s most dramatic moment occurred in the 17th century in the time of the Thirty Years War. At the time the castle was owned by the Teutonic Knights. In 1626 Danish regiments appeared below the castle and Sovinec was surrendered without a fight by Hetman Wembofsky. The grandmasters of the Teutonic Knights therefore decided to improve the castle fortifications. Thanks to this the castle became a modern fortress with massive bastion fortifications. However, a difficult test awaited the castle. Swedish forces with 8,000 soldiers and 82 cannons under the leadership of Lennart Torstensson encircled the castle on September 16, 1643; following a fierce battle and an honourable surrender on 7 October 1643 the Swedish forces occupied the castle. The Teutonic Knights regained the castle in 1650 and following essential repairs Sovinec served until the middle of the 18th century as an Order fortress.
EVENTS AT THE CASTLE
The castle hosts a colourful array of events with daylong programmes, such as:
Easter Folk Celebration
Folk craft fair with an Easter atmosphere, music, and spring welcoming customs.
Off into the Land of Fairytales
Programme of entertainment for Children’s Day. Fairytales, juggling, magic, competitions, and knight jousting.
In the King’s Honour
Sovinec at the time of the Thirty Years War. Recreations of the attack on the castle, demonstrations of life in the besieged castle, with the possibility to look into the field camps of the enemy. Exhibition of weapons, armour, and wall scaling methods. Saturday evening programme with battle and fireworks.
